Wild Coast Magazine

A new magazine, Wild Coast Magazine, designed for wilderness kayakers has started. The first edition is in the kayak shops and is also available online.

I was interviewed in the first edition regarding the beautiful stand of old growth firs on the Koksilah River. Let's do a SKUNC hike there sometime.

The editor of the magazine, John Kimantas would like to see an article about the Hesquiat Peninsula from the SKUNK hike there in July. If someone on that trip has a very high quality camera and skills to match, perhaps they could provide some magazine quality photos for the article.

John's atlases of the Vancouver Island Coast are a beautiful piece of work. I bought the atlases for the east and west coast of the Island.

There is also an article about the resurrected BC Marine Trail (BCMT) project:

I connected with Stephanie Meinke to get the SKUNCS included in the work being done on the BCMT project. I'm looking into collaborating with the new Victoria Sea Kayak Club on doing an inventory of campsites from Tofino to Victoria. I've already explored and mapped the campsites on this piece of coast so hopefully I can make a contribution. Let me know if you would like to help with this.

If anyone wants to co-ordinate a trip for the SKUNCS, just let me know. The more the merrier.

I am doing the training to certify as a sea kayak guide with SKGABC.COM in May. The pre-reading I have done on liability and waivers is quite interesting. One of the advantages of having a waiver is that is shifts the legal focus from civil law to contract law. I plan to adapt one of the existing waivers from the guide course and apply it to SKUNCS. It would also be prudent to have everyone's contact information and an emergency contact. Another issue for discussion is paying for the SKUNCS website which costs about $150/year.

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Hope to see you on the water soon.
